Olive oil is one of nature’s greatest gifts, and in Greece we have the privilege of producing it in abundance, making it a fundamental ingredient in everyday cooking.
Olive oil is rich in vitamin E, monounsaturated fatty acids (up to 83%), and antioxidant compounds (olive polyphenols such as oleic acid, oleuropein, and squalene).
These components contribute positively to stomach and digestive health, as well as to cardiovascular well-being. They help reduce “bad” LDL cholesterol while increasing “good” HDL cholesterol. Olive oil is also believed to play a preventive role against certain types of cancer and osteoporosis.
Below are four key reasons why olive oil deserves a place in your daily diet:
Reduce the Risk of Breast Cancer
A Spanish study found that women who followed a Mediterranean diet enriched with extra virgin olive oil had a lower risk of developing breast cancer.
The study included approximately 4,300 women with an average age of 67. Participants were divided into two groups: one consumed one liter of extra virgin olive oil per week, while another consumed 30 grams of nuts daily. A third control group followed a low-fat diet.
Over five years, 35 cases of breast cancer were diagnosed. Women in the olive oil group showed, on average, a 68% lower riskcompared to those following a low-fat diet. The group consuming nuts did not show a significant reduction in risk.
Supports Cardiovascular Health
Olive oil is a rich source of monounsaturated fatty acids, which help reduce the risk of heart disease by lowering blood lipid levels and preventing arterial blockage.
Numerous studies support the protective role of extra virgin olive oil against cardiovascular diseases. It has long been known to reduce total cholesterol and low-density lipoproteins (LDL) in the blood. The World Health Organization recommends consuming two tablespoons of olive oil daily to support heart health.
Supports Weight Management
Olive oil is high in monounsaturated fats, which have been shown to aid in fat loss. It promotes satiety and may help reduce abdominal fat when incorporated into a balanced diet.
Aids Digestion
Small studies suggest that olive oil may support digestive function and help relieve symptoms of constipation. Consuming one tablespoon before bedtime may act as a mild natural laxative. δυσκοιλιότητας. Η κατανάλωση μίας κουταλιάς κάθε βράδι πριν τον ύπνο δρα ως ήπιο υπακτικό.
